As Fall Approaches, Install Pond Netting Across It To Keep Falling Leaves, Debris And Even Predators From Entering Your Water Features And Putting Your Pond Health At Risk!
Autumn can be beautiful with the changing leaves but it's those very culprits that can put too much stress on your pond and harm your plants and fish. Most ponds should have a net installed over the top to keep leaves and other organic debris out. As leaves decompose, they disturb the water quality of your pond and can significantly harm the health of your fish and promote algae growth. Always remember that an unbalanced pond affects everything in your ecosystem.
Another reason for netting is to keep predators out. Spring and fall are when local predators are most active. Get to know which animals are most common in your area by contacting your local animal control or even your state fish and game department. The most common backyard pond hunters are coyotes, bobcats, foxes and raccoons. They are less likely to attack ponds where koi and other fish have plenty of places to hide - they are looking for easy hunts. Netting is a great predator deterrent.
You can purchase pond netting online or at any outdoor store or nursery. Selecting the right netting is fairly straightforward - make sure you have the right length and width for your water feature. Also, be aware of the size of the holes in your netting. For predator protection, larger mesh holes are okay but, for guarding against leaves, you may want smaller holes. This is especially true as the leaves dry and shrivel up.
Regularly sweep or collect the leaves from the netting so they don't get wet and heavy, which can tear your netting.
The easiest way to install the netting is to simply stretch it over the top and secure the ends with heavy rocks or tent stakes. Be sure to put something in the middle to keep the net off of the water's surface. Placing a beach ball or long PVC pipe in the middle will help achieve this. There is even some pond netting that comes pre-formed on a domed framework.
Keeping leaves and predators away from your pond will ensure the health of your fish and allow them an easier start in the Spring.
