Are Fireworks Bad For Your Pond?

To Keep Fireworks Debris Out Of Your Pond And Protect Your Aquatic Creatures And Plants, Consider Covering It With A Netting Around The 4th!

Are fireworks bad for your pond? This is a hotly debated issue between fireworks enthusiasts and pond owners.  While there are no definitive tests to answer this question completely considering all fireworks types, distance and environment, it's better to play it safe and remove any and all fireworks debris from your ponds and water features immediately.

First of all, as a pond owner, you can relax.  For the most part, it would take a massive amount of fireworks to release any substantial toxins to harm your plants, fish and pond.  Yes, fireworks release copper compounds, sulfur dioxide, lead nitrate and lead chloride that can be a hazard to water ecosystems but a few pieces of debris are an extremely low level threat to your pond.

The fact is that you should be more invested in getting out the foreign debris.  Pieces of firework can become lodged in your filter system or caught in plant life causing obstacles for fish.  While not a fool-proof plan, you can acquire some netting from your local aquatic or home improvement stores and create a temporary shield to catch falling debris.  This should make clean up a little easier.

In the light of the next morning, inspect your pond for any debris that needs to be removed or any damage that should be rectified.  As long as you correct the situation within a reasonable time-frame you shouldn't need to worry about anything clogging or harming your system.

Laughing Waters Inc. would like to wish all of you a very happy and safe Fourth of July!

What To Ask Before Installing A Water Feature

Ponds and water features can be amazing relaxation spots or add such beauty to an otherwise blank area.  There are many reasons someone might want to add a particular water feature but before you start picking out fish, plants or colors, there are a few questions you may want to ask yourself. Most important, what are you hoping to achieve with a water feature? The type of water feature you choose will largely depend on why you want it in the first place.  Are you trying to reduce a noisy background?  Are you creating a relaxation spot for yourself and your family?  Are you trying to create a more natural landscape for local wildlife?  There are many options to choose from when it comes to water features so understanding if you need a simple fountain to create more ambient noise or crafting a stream and waterfall to turn your yard into a mini-vacation spot is crucial. You don't have to choose a definite water feature or understand every process in crea...
